What Actually Happens at Your First Aesthetic Consultation?

If you’ve been thinking about aesthetic treatments but feel a bit nervous, you’re not alone. One of the most common things patients tell me is that they didn’t book sooner simply because they didn’t know what to expect.

As an aesthetics doctor based in Norfolk, I believe a consultation should feel calm, informative and completely pressure-free. In this post, I’ll talk you through exactly what happens during an initial consultation, so you can decide whether it’s right for you – with confidence.

Why the consultation matters so much

Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures, even when the results are subtle and natural. A proper consultation isn’t just a formality, it’s a vital part of safe, ethical practice.

My role during your consultation is to:

  • Understand what’s bothering you (and why)
  • Assess your facial anatomy and skin health
  • Make sure treatment is safe and appropriate for you
  • Explain your options clearly
  • Help you decide whether to proceed – not push you to book

Sometimes, the safest and best decision is not to treat, and that’s always on the table.

Step 1: Talking about you (not the treatment)

We always start with a conversation. I’ll ask what prompted you to book and what changes you’ve noticed, whether that’s tiredness, skin quality, volume loss, or something else.

There are no right or wrong answers, and no expectation that you’ll know the names of treatments. You don’t need to say “I want filler here” or “I need Botox”. That’s my job to work out with you.

I also take time to understand how you’re feeling about your appearance. Aesthetic treatments should support confidence and wellbeing, never create pressure or unrealistic expectations.

Step 2: Medical history and safety checks

Because I’m a doctor, your medical history is an essential part of the consultation.

I’ll ask about:

  • Current and past medical conditions
  • Medications and supplements
  • Allergies
  • Previous aesthetic treatments
  • Skin concerns such as acne, rosacea or pigmentation

This isn’t just paperwork; it directly affects which treatments are safe for you and how your body is likely to respond.

Step 3: Facial assessment (this is not about flaws)

I then carry out a gentle facial assessment. This looks at:

  • Facial structure and balance
  • Muscle movement
  • Skin quality and elasticity
  • Natural asymmetries (everyone has them)

This isn’t about pointing out “problems”. It’s about understanding how your face moves and ages so that any treatment enhances your natural features rather than changing them.

Step 4: Discussing treatment options (in plain English)

If treatment is appropriate, I’ll explain your options clearly and honestly.

We’ll talk about:

  • What the treatment actually does
  • What results you can realistically expect
  • How long results last
  • Downtime and recovery
  • Risks and side effects (no sugar-coating)

If something isn’t right for you, or isn’t likely to give the result you’re hoping for, I’ll tell you. Trust is far more important than offering every treatment under the sun.

Step 5: No pressure to proceed

You never have to decide on the day.

Many patients choose to go away, think about it, and come back later, especially if they’re new to aesthetics. I actively encourage this. A good decision is a calm decision.

If we do plan treatment, it will always be:

  • At a pace you’re comfortable with
  • Tailored to you
  • Focused on natural, balanced results

Why choosing a doctor-led consultation matters

Aesthetic treatments are not just about how something looks; they’re about anatomy, safety, psychology and judgement.

Seeing a medically trained aesthetic doctor means:

  • Your consultation is grounded in medical knowledge
  • Complications are understood, recognised and managed
  • Your wellbeing is prioritised over trends

Final thoughts

A first aesthetic consultation should feel reassuring, not intimidating. You should leave feeling informed, listened to, and in control of your choices.

If you’re considering aesthetic treatments in Norfolk and want an honest, medical-led approach, you’re welcome to get in touch or book a free consultation.
